Our History & Carl E. Ravin
RAI Labs has a rich history of innovation and collaboration, evolving from a coalition of interdependent laboratories into a leader in translational and quantitative imaging research, shaping the field through groundbreaking discoveries.
FOUNDED
1990
Thoracic Imaging Research Division Established.
1990: Thoracic Imaging Research Division (later named as Digital Imaging Research Division) was established by Carl E Ravin. Carey Floyd was named as its first director.
1990: Jim Dobbins, III, joined the faculty in 1985 and was one of the two initial faculty members of the Thoracic Imaging Research Divison along with Carey Floyd.
1995: Gina Tourassi, Joseph Lo, and Alan Baydush joined the lab as faculty.
2000
Duke Medical Physics Graduate Program Started.
2000: Ehsan Samei joined the lab as faculty. The lab initiated the Medical Physics Seminar Series which continued to present time as part of the current medical physics program.
2001: Paul Segars joined the lab as faculty.
2001-2004: The lab initiated a feasibility assessment and development process for the formation of a graduate program in medical physics.
2004: Ehsan Samei was appointed as director. The name of the lab was formally changed to Duke Advanced Imaging Laboratories and positioned to be a coalition of inter-dependent laboratories pursuing research in translational and quantitative imaging.
2004: The Duke Medical Physics Graduate Program was officially started to provide world-class graduation education in medical physics.
